Welcome to the first metro radio survey of 2016. We’ve waited with baited breath as to how the first survey of the year would pan out and the results are finally in.

In the Sydney market 2GB still holds the number 1 spot with an 11.6 share overall but the gap is closing in on them as the next closest competitor is KIIS 1065 with a share of 9.8 – only 1.8 share points behind. Just to give you a comparison, in Survey 8, 2015 they led by 3.9 share points. Smooth FM was strong following KIIS as second place on the FM dial with a share of 8.6 overall – a 1.7 point gain on last survey. Austereo would be a happy network with Triple M showing a 1 point gain to 7.1 and 2DayFM on the upward gaining 0.7 share points to a 4.0 share.

Alan Jones once again dominated breakfast in Sydney with a 16.0 share and his closest competitor was KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O with an amazing 12.5 share a huge growth of 2.4 on last survey. 2Day FM saw a massive gain of 2.6 in Mornings while 2GB lost a huge 4.4 in the same daypart but still won the session with a 14.4 share. This demonstrates the influence of Ray Hadley – he still dominates. KIIS won drive with an 11.6 share followed WSFM, and Smooth FM won the weekend shift with a share of 10.3.

In Melbourne, 3AW continues to lead the pack with a share of 12.9. The next closest competitor was GOLD FM with a share of 8.9 after making a gain of 0.7 share points on last survey. Fox FM took a bit of a hit losing 1.1 share points on last survey which now seats them at 8.6. In Breakfast 3AW lost 2 share points but still leads the session by a country mile with a 17.8 share. Triple M follows with an 8.5 Share. Fox’s Hamish and Andy lead the Drive session with a share of 10.5 followed by 3AW at 9.9 share points. On weekends 3AW is still the clear leader with 11.5 share points.

There was a lot of movement in Brisbane for the first survey of the year with almost all stations showing quite marked drops in share with the exception of Triple M who had an increase of 2.4 share points to 10.8. Despite this, the leader in the Brisbane market remains 97.3FM with a share of 12.1 followed by Nova with a share of 11. Nova and 97.3 both won equal place in the breakfast session with a share of 11.6 closely followed by Triple M at 11.2. Drive was dominated by Nova in this market however 97.3 took the top spot for weekend listening.

In Perth, Mix 94.5 remains number 1 with a share of 15 points followed by Nova 93.7 at 13.7. Nova took out the breakfast slot with a share of 13.3 and Drive was dominated by Mix 94.5 FM.

Nova is the most listened to network in Australia with 3,295,000 people
